Every November 21st, Venice and its once-Venetian Republic neighbors transform as they celebrate the Festa della Madonna della Salute, a poignant holiday born in 1630. This cherished tradition honors the Virgin Mary of Health, credited with ending a catastrophic plague that decimated a third of Venice's population, and continued to be passionately observed until the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1796.
